Male Fitness in Divorce
Countless times throughout our lives, we’ve heard about the Chinese philosophical ideas of Yin and Ying. We all know that these spiritual ways of thought could help us in our own lives, but we often forget how to apply them. While going through a divorce can be one of life’s most difficult struggles, causing grief and sadness, if we look at the other side of the divorce coin (call it the Yin or the Yang), we may find that this difficult experience, though trying and devastating, has its upsides, by nature. Aside from becoming stronger, happier and more independent though overcoming divorce trials and tribulations, recent findings show that divorce can help men become more fit and healthy.
Published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, these findings were based on 9000 men and women aged 45 or older who had regular treadmill tests to measure fitness. These men and women were quizzed about their relationship status over an eight-year period. The Karolinska Institute researchers in Stockholm, Sweden, found a higher fitness level among the divorced males; it seems that their fitness levels were attributed to the social pressures on single men to stay fit in order to be attractive- a pressure married men do not often feel. So while divorce is one of life’s toughest curve balls, lets just say learning to work with this curve ball is an exercise that has its rewards!
